Selective Browsing — When Only Your Network Cannot Reach the Site

Sometimes you cannot open your website or download mail from your domain, but people elsewhere can. That often means your ISP’s DNS is having trouble resolving your domain — sometimes called selective browsing or a local DNS problem.

What to do first

  1. Report it to your ISP. Tell them your connection is selectively failing to open certain websites or mail hosts. Ask them to log it so they can investigate on their side.
  2. Meanwhile, try a different public DNS resolver on your computer or phone so you can keep working while the ISP looks into it.

Try public DNS (example: Google)

Many people temporarily switch their device to Google Public DNS:

  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4

Step-by-step for common systems:

  • Windows 11 / 10 — see Change Public DNS on Windows 11 (and Windows 10)
  • macOS — see Change DNS on macOS
  • Android — see Change DNS on Android Phones
  • Ubuntu — see Change DNS on Ubuntu Linux

Tip: Changing DNS on your device only affects that device. It does not change your domain’s DNS at the registrar or at Cid Hosting.

If the problem is only email or only your site

  • Confirm the site loads on a phone using mobile data (not the same office Wi‑Fi).
  • Try Roundcube webmail at https://yourdomain.com/webmail.
  • If outsiders can reach the site and mail but your office cannot, it is almost always a local DNS or network issue — not a reason to move the hosting.
