How to Set Up Your Email on iPhone or iPad

This takes about five minutes. We recommend IMAP, so your mail stays in sync with your computer and webmail.

You'll need

  • Your full email address (e.g. [email protected])
  • Your email password
  • Server name: mail.yourdomain.com (use your own domain)

Add the account

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account. (On older iOS versions: Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.)
  2. Tap Other > Add Mail Account.
  3. Enter your name, email address, password and a description (e.g. "Work"), then tap Next.
  4. Choose IMAP at the top.
  5. Under Incoming Mail Server:
    • - Host Name: mail.yourdomain.com
    • - User Name: your full email address
    • - Password: your email password
  6. Under Outgoing Mail Server, enter the same host name, user name and password. (Even though the screen says "optional," please fill them in — sending needs them.)
  7. Tap Next. When the account checks out, leave Mail switched on and tap Save. You can switch Notes off; it isn't used with our mail service.

Check the ports

Your iPhone usually picks these up by itself, but it's worth a quick look:

  1. Go back to Mail Accounts and tap your new account, then tap the account again.
  2. Tap Advanced. Under Incoming Settings, check Use SSL is on and Server Port is 993.
  3. Go back, tap SMTP (under Outgoing Mail Server) > the primary server. Check Use SSL is on, Authentication is Password, and Server Port is 465.

Folders (optional, but tidy)

In Advanced > Mailbox Behaviours, set Drafts, Sent, Deleted and Archive to the matching folders on the server. This keeps sent and deleted mail in the same place as webmail and your computer.

Prefer POP3?

POP3 downloads mail to one device and can leave other devices out of sync. If you need it, choose POP in step 4 and use port 995 with SSL for incoming mail. Outgoing settings are the same.

If it doesn't work

  • "Cannot verify server identity": check the host name for typos. If it's correct, don't tap Continue straight away — open a ticket and we'll check the certificate for your domain.
  • Can receive but can't send: make sure the outgoing user name and password are filled in and the port is 465 with SSL on.
  • Changed your password recently? Update it in Mail Accounts > your account.
